Why you should begin unfollowing.

begin unfollowing, iPad, Macbook, bed, hot drink

I’ve seen a few of these kind of posts around lately and thought I would give my two cents on the matter.

Why we should begin unfollowing, and why that’s completely acceptable.

It’s all well and good following all those hashtag goals instagram accounts because it’ll inspire you to change your bad habits and become a gym bunny and super awesome human, blah blah blah – guilty as charged!

With the increasing level of false instagram posts, advertising this life that may or may not be real, I’ve started to unfollow certain instagram accounts, and you should too.

We’re now in a world where comparison is not only the thief of joy, but it’s also the norm, and quite frankly that’s just not okay. No one should make you feel like you or the life you are living is inferior to theirs whether they intend to or not, and you shouldn’t make yourself feel that way either by consumption.

I am not against following ‘pretty’ instagram accounts – I usually follow for one of three reasons though, photography inspo, outfit inspo or because I can relate to that person somehow – these three reasons I now use as criteria as to whether I continue following a certain account. If I’m not taken by their photos, their outfit choices or just cannot relate to them in any way, I press unfollow. It may seem a little harsh, but personal happiness is much more important than following someone’s every move.

It’s one less person to compare yourself or your life to. Everyone knows that only the very good bits are shown on instagram, but it doesn’t make it any easier to disregard that fact when you’re looking at someone sitting with a coffee in a sky high hotel room overlooking the New York City skyline.

What’s the point in following people if their content only makes you feel bad about yourself? Always ask yourself why you are following them, does their content inspire you, entertain you or engage you? If you can’t say yes to any of these things, maybe it’s time to hit unfollow.
